It puts a rose in every cheek...
I got it into my head to make some vegemite on toast this morning, the ultimate Australian food!! I used to give it to the kids all the time when they were really little, because it is an aquired taste, eg: from birth. My 5 yr old will eat it, but my 7 yr old won't go near it anymore and he used to love it.
The trick to the perfect vegemite on toast is not to slather it on like peanut butter, but to make sure the toast is very hot, the butter melted and then an nice even thin scraping of the vegemite. Delicious!
Also medicinal. If you have a bit of an upset stomach, nothing cures it like some toast with vegemite.
And just to prove that people actually eat this stuff, here we are eating it!!
And here is the new Vegemite commercial from Australia. I don't really know how new it is because I found it on YouTube, but it's new to me, and it combines the old commercial that I know from when I was a kid!!
UPDATE:
Here are the ingredients of Vegemite:
Yeast Extract, Salt, Mineral salt, Malt extract (from barley), Natural colour, vegetable extract, Niacin, thiamine, Riboflavin, folate

Today is the perfect day, weatherwise, for Vegemite!
Thank goodness, we have laws here in America to protect children against abuse.
As a PROFESSIONAL CHEF and a mother, I simply cannot imagine ANYONE feeding this type of crap to children.
I can remember taking my first ever bite of a vegemite toast when I was an exchange student staying in NZ. I had heard so much about it from my exchange partner while she stayed in Germany with us, that I thought it must be the best thing in the world. It's so true the thing they say about either loving it or hating it and I'm afraid I'm not a lover, so maybe you can picture my face when I took that bite.
Wow chiffOnade. Stop being so high and mighty. People have their own preferences so respect that. As for myself, I don't like vegimite, but if I did, those pictures would look delicious!
I'd love to try Vegemite or Marmite, sometime. I've heard about it for a long time and have even seen it at some grocery stores in my area, but I'm afraid that I'm not willing to pay $7+ on a tiny jar of something that may very well make me vomit.
^_~
Oh my, chiff0nade!, get a grip! Vegemite is one of the tastiest, most nourishing things one can give to children. FYI it is a yeast extract & contains healthy amounts of all the b vitamin complex as well as folates. I happen to enjoy it spread on toast or crackers & even on pasta. Check out the Vegemite website for complete nutritional info. It's the down under version of peanut butter, only healthier.
Chiffonade- Have you ever tried Vegemite? Your poor kids, sounds like they don't have a lot of food choices! Seriously, as a PROFESSIONAL CHEF, you might try being a little more broad-minded, less judgemental and adventuresome. That's how we all learn. Being afraid of new things is stultifying, at least to me.
Vegemite rocks, Chiffonade. As a PROFESSIONAL CHEF, surely you should embrace new and interesting tastes?
That sweet faced little girl doesn't look to be in any danger, chiffonade. I'm willing to bet that the vegemite is healthier than good 'ol McDonalds! You might want to be a bit more open to international foods, being a 'professional' and all.
Ignore chiffonade. She/he is a psychopath that picks up blogs from "Tastespotting" and trolls them. (S)he hit up a collaborative blog of mine a few months ago.
AS an Aussie, I am CHUFFED to see Vegie getting the kudos it deserves!
It's also great hangover cure... with all that VitB.
My old Gran even used to use it as a flavour agent in soups!
The key is most definitely to spread it thin, on hot buttered toast.
Good for what ails you!!
Good for you, Purple Goddess, I've seen chiff's dopey comments a few places. If, indeed, she is a "PROFESSIONAL", I think she maybe got her training at the "big house". Oh well, at least it'll keep her off the streets! (meow)
another vote for vegemite as a hangover food.
also, it can add some oomph to gravy if you're struggling.
can someone tell me what's the difference between vegemite and marmite? I remember loving marmite when i was a kid growing up in singapore =) it definitely made me smile when i found it in a british store in the U.S.
I say toMAto!
The "person" posting as Chiffonade here and at most sites where she declares herself to be a PROFESSIONAL CHEF is a sad little man named Charles Treuter. He's a convicted internet harasser and trolls food blogs 24/7 posing as different women he's stalking at the moment, including the "real" chiffonade.
